在西班牙，每年都有成千上萬隻的高哥犬被人工繁育出來，然後出售給當地的獵人用於狩獵或賽犬，並且被迫在潮濕、狹小又骯髒的籠子中度過一生。然而，那些不再擅長狩獵或是跑得不夠快的高哥犬都會遭受虐待，而一旦過了狩獵季節，失去用途的高哥犬也都會被殺害或是拋棄。
根據國外媒體Bored Panda的報導，一名來自美國的攝影師——特拉維斯·帕特諾德（Travis Patenaude）特地前往西班牙塞維利亞的一家狗狗收容所，在裡面與500多隻西班牙高哥犬（Galgo）生活長達10天的時間，並且了解牠們背後的淒慘故事，令網友們深受感動。

2009年，「本傑明梅納特基金會」（Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert）在西班牙創辦了一家狗狗收容所，專門拯救那些受虐和被遺棄的西班牙高哥犬，並幫助牠們恢復健康和找到一個充滿愛的家，同時提高人們對於這個犬種的保育意識。

在救援人員的照顧下，這些原本樣子可憐的狗狗都逐漸恢復了原本的樣子，一個個找到了屬於自己溫暖的家。由於許多西班牙人認為高哥犬並不適合作為寵物，所以大多數的高哥犬都被來自世界各地的好心人收養了。與此同時，許多愛護動物團體依然致力於救這些「工具狗」，希望政府可以禁止把高哥犬當作「工具狗」，來停止用完就丟棄這樣的悲劇繼續發生。
